I THINK, THEREFORE I AM VEGAN

Saviourship Within Veganism

Zipporah writes about the tendency of the vegan movement (especially perpetuated by white vegans) to want to save the “innocent” and “voiceless” and to do something that feels good to them, rather than examine other areas of oppression that are being upheld. “If animals could speak, they would likely demand more from us and correct our activism so that it most accurately meets their varying needs. If animals could speak, they would center themselves and hold us to account.” She calls readers to do more, questioning their why behind being vegan, whether their ego is centered in their activism, and how it fits into a broader radical liberation stance. Beasts of Burden: Animal and Disability Liberation

Disability rights and animal rights are two seemingly disparate areas that are more interconnected than you might think. Author Sunaura Taylor reflects on her own identity and coming into consciousness of how those with disabilities are often viewed as more animalistic and therefore less than human. She argues that ableism harms animals and humans alike. Read an interview with her here and check out her book here.

SAX, RUGS & ROCK’N’ROLL

Joe Duplantier

Joe Duplantier is the vegan vocalist and guitarist for the French metal band Gojira. The band have released seven studio albums in the past twenty years and have toured the world performing at some of the biggest festivals on the planet. The band were also nominated for a Grammy award for their 2016 album titled “Magma.” Joesph’s lyrics often deal with issues about the environment and in the past he has expressed his admiration for groups such as Sea Shepherd. He stated in a 2008 interview that if he wasn’t a musician he “would be an activist at Green Peace or Sea Shepherd, an action which defends the planet or the animals. Without any hesitation.” When once asked what people can do to help the environment Joesph replied “Quit meat. Quit dairy products…. I don’t wanna talk about it too much because people get annoyed, but at the same time, I wanna talk about it. So maybe one first step is to get informed. Look on the internet, read books, watch documentaries and see what’s happening…. According to a lot of people, [meat-based diets are] the number-one cause of destruction of the environment.” Like many vegans, Joe is passionate about doing what he can to improve the lives of animals, even if it means giving up something you’re used to. “I’ve been a vegan for a couple of years now – I loved eating meat before I became vegan, but I had to stop because I totally disagreed with the way animals are treated. Society is corrupt, but there’s no reason to be scared of seeing the truth. When you reduce your involvement in all that crap, by 20 percent or even 90 percent, it’s very uplifting.”
